- 1905: An Earthquake in Kangra, India killed 20,000
- 1920: Arabs attacked Jews in Jerusalem
- 1945: US forces liberated the Ohrdruf concentration camp in Germany, the first such camp to be liberated by the US Army
- 1960: Senegal declared independence from France
- 1968: US civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray
- 1968: Riots broke out in over 100 cities in the United States following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr
- 2008: Raid on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) owned YFZ Ranch in Texas. 401 children and 133 women were taken into state custody
- 2019: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) pledged to roll back anti-LGBT policies, including not baptizing children of gay parents
