- National Home Warranty Day
- 1355: The St. Scholastica’s Day riot broke out in Oxford, England, leaving 62 scholars and about 30 others dead in two days
- 1763: The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War, resulting in Britain taking control of Canada
- 1842: Moreton Bay Penal Colony, on the site of the modern city of Brisbane, Australia, was abolished and opened for free settlement
- 1855: US citizenship laws were amended so that all children of US parents born abroad were granted US citizenship
- 1863: The first US fire extinguisher patent was granted to Alanson Crane of Virginia
- 1878: The Pact of Zanjón was signed between Cuban rebels and the Spanish bringing the 10 Years War to an end
- 1890: Around 11 million acres were ceded to the US by Sioux Indians, then opened for settlement
- 1927: US President Calvin Coolidge asked for a second disarmament conference
- 1930: The Grain Stabilization Corporation was authorized by Congress in an effort to subsidize grain prices and support farmers
- 1934: The first Jewish immigrant ship broke the English blockade in Palestine
- 1943: The “Manifesto of Algerian People” was published, calling for equality and self-determination
- 1954: President Dwight Eisenhower warned against US intervention in Vietnam
- 1959: A tornado in St Louis killed 19 people and injured 265 more
- 1970: An avalanche smashed into a youth hostel in Val d’Isere, France, killing 40 Belgian, French, and German youths
- 1972: The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) banned “Give Ireland Back to the Irish” by Wings
- 1975: The Provisional Irish Republican Army agreed to a truce and ceasefire with the British government and the Northern Ireland Office
- 1991: Lithuania voted for independence from the USSR
- 1998: Voters in Maine repealed a gay rights law passed in 1997 becoming the first US state to abandon such a law
- 2019: A global review says insect populations are collapsing worldwide threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems” with 40% of insect species declining and 30% endangered
- 2020: More than 30 bushfires were put out by the heaviest rainfall in 30 years in New South Wales, Australia, helping end one of the worst bushfire seasons ever after 46 million acres were burnt, over 1 billion animals killed, and 34 people were killed
