On This Day
- 1919: Austria expelled all Habsburgers
- 1925: Great Britain switched back to the gold standard
- 1944: The US Supreme Court, in Smith v Allwright, ruled “white primaries” are unconstitutional
- 1974: “The Super Outbreak” was the second largest tornado outbreak in the US. Over a 24 hour period there were 148 confirmed tornadoes in 13 US states killing approximately 315 people and injuring nearly 5,500
- 1997: The Thalit Massacre began in Algeria. All but 1 of the 53 inhabitants of Thalit were killed by guerrillas
- 2013: 50 people were killed by flooding across Argentina
- 2016: The Panama Papers were published: 11.5 million confidential documents from offshore law firm Mossack Fonseca exposed widespread illegal activities including fraud, kleptocracy, tax evasion, and the violation of international sanctions by the world’s elite in the world’s largest ever data leak
- 2019: Brunei brought into force new Sharia laws punishing gay sex and adultery with death by stoning, prompting widespread condemnation
