- 1360: The Treaty of Brétigny was ratified at Calais, marking the end of the first phase of the Hundred Years’ War
- 1492: 24 Jews were burned at the stake in Mecklenburg, Germany
- 1648: The Treaty of Westphalia ended The Thirty Years’ War and recognized Switzerland’s independence
- 1861: West Virginia seceded from Virginia
- 1902: Santa Maria volcano in Guatemala erupted, killing 6000 people, and becoming one of the 20th century’s largest eruptions
- 1932: The British government signed a trade treaty with the USSR
- 1938: The US forbade child labor in factories
- 1940: The US Fair Labor Standards of 1938 went into effect mandating a minimum wage and a 44 hour work week
- 1940: Protestant churches protested against the dismissal of Jewish civil servants
- 1946: The Netherlands and Indonesia signed a cease fire
- 1964: Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) gained independence from Great Britain
- 1968: The People’s Democracy (PD) staged a protest demonstration at the Stormont Parliament buildings in Belfast
- 1988: Typhoon Ruby sank a ferry in the Philippines causing hundreds of people to drown
- 2012: Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Jamaica killing 1 person and causing over $50 million in damage
- 2018: Scientists confirmed Hawaii’s East Island had been wiped out after being hit by Hurricane Walaka
