  • Brain Injury Awareness Day
  • World Hearing Day
  • 1699: Jews were expelled from Lübeck, Germany
  • 1791: Israel Jacobs, the first Jewish member of the US Congress, took office representing Pennsylvania
  • 1798: Catholic women were forced to do penance for kindling Sabbath fires for Jews
  • 1894: Shanghai experienced a “Great Fire” resulting in the destruction of over 1,000 buildings
  • 1899: Cyclone Mahina swept in north of Cooktown, Queensland, Austrailia, with massive waves, leaving over 300 people dead
  • 1909: The US prohibited the interstate transportation of game birds
  • 1911: Victor Berger of Wisconsin became the first Socialist Congressman in the US
  • 1929: Charles Curtis of Kansas became the first Native American Vice President
  • 1930: Widespread floods struck Languedoc and areas in Southwestern France, resulting in the deaths of over 700 people
  • 1943: Transport #50 departed with French Jews for Maidanek and Sobibor Concentration Camps
  • 1954: James E. Wilkins was appointed the first black sub-cabinet member in the US
  • 1968: Martin Luther King Jr. announced plans for the Poor People’s Campaign
  • 1977: An earthquake in Romania killed 1,541 people
  • 1998: In Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services, the US Supreme Court ruled that federal laws banning on-the-job sexual harassment also apply when both parties are the same sex
  • 2007: In Estonian Parliamentary elections, approximately 30,000 voters took advantage of electronic voting. It was the world’s first nationwide vote where part of the vote casting was allowed by remote electronic voting
  • 2009: The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity in Darfur, becoming the first sitting head of state to be indicted
  • 2020: A new study published by World Weather Attribution confirmed human-caused climate change made the 2020 Australian bushfire season worse
  • 2020: In a “Once in a century” winter, Moscow experienced the hottest winter in 140 years with an average temperature of 7.5 C (13.5 F) with virtually no snow
