  • National Relaxation Day

  • 1684: Spain and Germany signed a cease fire with France
  • 1867: The Representation of the People Act (1867) extended voting rights in the UK
  • 1876: The US government passed a law forcing removal of Native Americans from the Black Hills after gold was found there
  • 1941: Kovono Lithuanian Jews were herded into the Slobodka ghetto
  • 1942: 5 hostages were executed by Nazis in St-Michielsgestel
  • 1945: 3 days of “Peace Riots” began in San Francisco while the city was celebrating the end of World War II
  • 1947: India gained independence from Great Britain, but remained a dominion until 1950
  • 1950: An 8.6 earthquake in India killed between 20,000 and 30,000 people
  • 1952: 9 inches of rainfall created a 20 ft wave in Lynmouth, England, killing 34 people
  • 1955: Hurricane Connie dissipated after killing 43people in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland
  • 1960: The Congo (formerly Congo/Brazzaville) declared independence from France
  • 1964: Race riots occurred in the Chicago suburb of Dixmoor, Illinois
  • 1971: Bahrain gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1971: US President Richard Nixon imposed wage and price controls, along with suspension of convertibility of the U.S. dollar into gold on international markets
  • 1974: The US Congress once again legalized the private ownership of gold
  • 1974: Hurricane and floods ravage Bangladesh leading to the deaths of 4,000 people
  • 1990: At least 150 people died in partisan clashes between South Africa’s African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party
  • 1998: The Omagh bombing, the worst terrorist incident of The Troubles, killed 29 people and injures about 220 more people
  • 1999: About 30 people were killed in the Beni Ounif massacre in Algeria leading to temporary tensions with Morocco
  • 2007: An 8.0-magnitude earthquake off the Pacific coast devastated parts of Peru, killing 514 people and injuring 1,090 more people
