  • 1835: The Treaty of New Echota was signed between the US government and representatives of a minority Cherokee political faction to cede all Cherokee lands East of the Mississippi River to the United States
  • 1890: The US 7th Cavalry massacred more than 200 captive Sioux at Wounded Knee, South Dakota
  • 1911: Mongolia gained independence from the Qing dynasty
  • 1920: The Yugoslav government banned the Communist Party
  • 1947: A ship carrying Jewish immigrants was driven away from Palestine
  • 1949: Hungary nationalized its industries
  • 1998: Leaders of the Khmer Rouge apologized for genocide in Cambodia in the 1970’s that killed over a million people
  • 2013: The Chaparrastique Volcano erupted in El Salvador
  • 2015: The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Guinea’s Ebola epidemic over after 2,500 people died over 2 years
