On This Day
- 1828: Uruguay gained independence during peace talks between Brazil and Argentina
- 1881: A hurricane hit Florida and the Carolinas causing the deaths of about 700 people
- 1883: Krakatoa volcano, Indonesia, erupted with a force of 1,300 megatons and killed approximately 40,000 people
- 1894: Congress passed The Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act aka The Revenue Act of 1894, which reduced tariffs, but included a graduated income tax that was later struck down by the Supreme Court
- 1966: Race riots occurred in Waukegan, Illinois
- 1989: 100 people marched through Bensonhurst in New York City protesting racial killings
- 1991: Moldavia declared independence from USSR
- 2020: Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana as a category 4 storm with 150 mph winds and killed at least 16 people
