- 1655: New Amsterdam and Peter Stuyvesant barred Jews from military service
- 1833: Britain’s Slavery Abolition Act gained royal assent
- 1917: Ten suffragists were arrested as they picketed outside the White House in Washington, DC
- 1943: Denmark declared a universal strike against Nazi occupiers
- 1955: Emmett Till was kidnapped, beaten, and killed by white men in Money, Mississippi. His killers were eventually acquitted, but the case helped ignite the US civil rights movement
- 1963: Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech at a civil rights march at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC
- 1964: Philadelphia experienced a race riot
- 1973: A 6.8 earthquake centered in Oaxaca State, Mexico killed 527 people
- 1990: An F5 tornado hit Plainfield, Illinois, killing 29 people and injuring 353 more
- 1993: A dam broke in Qinghai, China. 223 people were killed as a result
- 2018: Puerto Rico raised the official death toll of 2017’s Hurricane Maria from 64 deaths to 2,975
