- Individual Rights Day

- 1540: Emperor Karel deprived the city Gent of its definitive rights and privileges
- 1640: English King Charles I signed a peace treaty with Scotland
- 1825: Portugal recognized the Independence of Brazil
- 1916: The US Congress accepted The Jones Act and independence for The Philippines
- 1941: German Einsatzkommando in Russia killed 1,469 Jewish children
- 1944: An Anti-German rebellion rose up in Slovakia
- 1991: The USSR suspended Communist Party activities
- 1997: At least 98 villagers were killed by the GIA in the Rais Massacre in Algeria
- 2005: Hurricane Katrina made it second and third landfalls as a category 3 hurricane, devastating much of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida Panhandle. More than 1,836 people were killed and the storm caused over $115 billion in damage
- 2017: Hurricane Harvey set the rainfall record (51.88 inches in Cedar Bayou) for a tropical cyclone in the continental US
- 2017: Monsoon rains in Mumbai caused chaos, closing schools and airports
