- National Grief Awareness Day
- 1146: European leaders outlawed crossbows with the intent to end war for all time
- 1563: The Jewish community of Neutitschlin, Moravia was expelled
- 1645: The Dutch and Indians signed a peace treaty in New Amsterdam (New York City)
- 1721: Russian and Sweden signed the Treaty of Nystad ending the North Sea War
- 1800: Gabriel Prosser led a slave rebellion in Richmond, Virginia
- 1843: African-Americans participated in a national political convention (Liberty Party) for the first time
- 1918: Czechoslovakia formed an independent republic
- 1928: Jawaharlal Nehru requested independence for India
- 1945: Hong Kong was liberated from Japanese control
- 1954: Hurricane Carol killed 68 on the US East Coast
- 1979: Hurricane David formed and over the next few weeks killed about 1200 people in Florida, Domincana, and the Dominican Republic
- 1990: Tatarstan declared its independence with the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the Tatar Soviet Socialist Republic
- 1999: East Timorese voted for independence in a referendum
- 2012: A cholera outbreak killed 229 people in Sierra Leone
- 2017: Floods across Bangladesh, Nepal, and India killed more 1200 people and damaged 697,000 houses
- 2017: Hurricane Irma formed near Cape Verde Islands. It would become a category 5 hurricane and kill at least 102 people
