On This Day
- 1777: Independent Vermont introduced a new constitution which prohibited slavery
- 1941: All the Jews living in Baltic States were required to wear a Jewish Star
- 1949: South Africa’s Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act went into effect, prohibiting marriage or sexual relationships between White people and people of other races
- 1963: The US banned all monetary transactions with Cuba
- 1969: US troop withdrawals from Vietnam began
- 1971: British soldiers shot and killed two Catholic civilians in Free Derry during street disturbances. As a result riots erupted and the Social Democratic and Labour Party withdraw from the Northern Ireland Parliament in protest
- 1981: French Prime Minister Maurois nationalized several industries in France including banking and steel manufacturing
- 1982: The Senegalese Trotskyist political party LCT was legally recognized
- 2012: Tens of thousands protested over election corruption in Mexico City after Enrique Peña Nieto’s win in the country’s presidential election
- 2019: Congolese general and rebel leader Bosco Ntaganda was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court in the Hague
