On This Day

  • Touch a Heart Tuesday
  • 1778: The British killed 17 Stockbridge Indians in The Bronx, New York during Revolution
  • 1886: The first major earthquake recorded in the eastern US occurred at Charleston, South Carolina causing 110 deaths
  • 1894: New Zealand passed The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act making New Zealand the first country in the world to outlaw strikes in favour of compulsory arbitration
  • 1911: The “Sullivan Act” requiring New Yorkers to possess licences for firearms small enough to be concealed went into effect
  • 1913: Dublin Metropolitan Police attack a massive protest rally killing two strikers
  • 1919: John Reed formed the American Communist Labor Party in Chicago
  • 1919: Petlyura’s Ukrainian Army killed 35 members of a Jewish defense group
  • 1939: A Japanese invasion army was driven out of Mongolia
  • 1940: The first edition of illegal opposition newspaper Free Netherlands was published
  • 1945: The Liberal Party of Australia was founded by Robert Menzies
  • 1954: Hurricane Carol hit New England killing 70 people. It was the costliest hurricane to that date and was the first storm name to be retired
  • 1957: The Federation of Malaya gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1962: Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1968: 12,000 died in 7.8 earthquake that also destroyed 60,000 buildings in Northeastern Iran
  • 1988: A 5-day power blackout of downtown Seattle began
  • 1990: East and West Germany signed a treaty to join legal and political systems
  • 1991: Uzbekistan declared independence from the Soviet Union following a failed coup in Moscow
  • 2015: Violent protests in Kiev after a Ukrainian Parliament vote left one national guard dead and 100 people injured
  • 2017: The International Organization for Migration stated 18,500 Rohingya Muslims had fled for Bangladesh from violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state after 110 people were killed
  • 2019: India removed citizenship status from 1.9 million people in state of Assam and left them off its new Citizens Registry
