On This Day
- 1666: A Hurricane hit Guadeloupe, Martinique, and St Christopher, killing thousands of people
- 1791: The Treaty of Sistova was signed ending the Ottoman-Habsburg Wars
- 1862: The US government collected its first income tax
- 1942: The first train with Jews departed Mechelen, Belgium for Auschwitz
- 1946: An 8.0 earthquake hit the northern Dominican Republic killing about 100 people leaving 20,000 people homeless
- 1948: A 5 day filibuster by Senators from Southern States succeeded in maintaining America’s poll tax
- 1980: Hurricane Aline struck and killed 272 people in Texas and the Caribbean between this day and August 11
- 1987: The US’s FCC voted 4-0 to rescind the fairness doctrine for broadcasters
- 2010: California’s Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative prohibiting same-sex marriage, was overturned
- 2015: 31 people were killed and 100 people were injured after floods swept two passenger trains off a bridge in Madhya Pradesh, India
