- National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day
- 1377: In the first known example of quarantine, the city council of Rugusa (now Dubroknik) passed a law saying newcomers from plague areas must isolate for 30 days, which was later extended to 40 days
- 1566: A tribunal convicted Agnes Waterhouse of witchcraft and sentenced her to death as the first British woman executed for the crime
- 1713: Russia and Turkey signed a peace treaty
- 1795: Spain and France signed a peace treaty
- 1862: A Hurricane hit Canton, China killing about 40,000 people
- 1919: During race riots in Chicago 38 people were killed and 500 people were injured
- 1934: The French socialist/communist party of People’s Front was formed
- 1935: Flooding at Yangtzee Jiang and Hoangh killed 200,000 people
- 1944: The Soviet Army freed Majdanek concentration camp
- 1953: North Korea and the United Nations signed an armistice to stop fighting and divide Korea at the 38th parallel
- 1954: An Armistice divided Vietnam into two countries
- 1955: Austria regained full independence after 4-power occupation since WWII
- 1968: Race riots occurred in Gary Indiana
