- World Nature Conservation Day
- 1717: Prussian King Frederik Willhelm I enacted compulsory education for 5-12 yrs
- 1742: Maria Theresa of Austria and Prussian King Frederick the Great signed a peace treaty in Berlin
- 1821: Peru declared independence from Spain
- 1883: Earthquakes triggered by the eruption of the volcano Epomeo destroyed 1,200 houses and killed 2,000 people
- 1893: A petition organised by Kate Sheppard demanding women’s suffrage was delivered to New Zealand’s parliament after having been signed by over 25,000 women, one fifth of the adult European female population
- 1932: US President Herbert Hoover used federal troops to evict the Bonus Army from their encampment resulting in 4 deaths
- 1942: Nazis killed 10,000 Jews in Minsk Belorussia Ghetto
- 1947: Iuliu Maniu’s Farmers’ Party was banned in Romania
- 1957: Heavy rain and a mudslide in Isahaya, Japan, killed nearly 1000 people
- 1976: The 8.2 Tangshan Earthquake killed over 240,000 people in Northern China. It was the largest loss of life from an earthquake in the 20th century
- 2005: A tornado touched down in a residential area in Southern Birmingham, England, causing £4,000,000 worth of damages and injuring 39 people
- 2018: The Carr Fire reached Redding, California. The fire killed 5 people and burned 80,000 acres
