On This Day
- 1003: A peace deal was signed between Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor and the pagan Slavic Wends
- 1309: Pope Clement V excommunicated the entire population of the city of Venice
- 1709: The dike at the town of Hardinxveld broke and the Alblasserwaard region was flooded
- 1866: US President Andrew Johnson vetoed civil rights legislation, but it later became the 14th Amendment
- 1890: A tornado struck Louisville, Kentucky, killing 76 people and injuring 200 more
- 1915: Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary was arrested and returned to quarantine on North Brother Island, New York after spending five years evading health authorities and causing several further outbreaks of typhoid
- 1944: 1,000 Jews left Drancy, France for Auschwitz Concentration Camp
- 1944: 2,000 Jews were murdered in Kaunas, Lithuania
- 1944: 40 Jewish policemen in the Riga, Latvia ghetto were shot by the Gestapo
- 1944: Children’s Aktion-Nazis collected all the Jewish children of Lovno
- 1961: Black demonstrators in Charleston, South Carolina staged ride-ins on street cars
- 1962: Archbishop Rummel ended racial segregation in New Orleans Catholic schools
- 1964: The magnitude 9.2 Great Alaska Earthquake and resulting tsunami killed 139 people in the largest US earthquake and second largest ever recorded in the world
- 1972: Ulster Vanguard organised an industrial strike against the imposition of direct rule on Northern Ireland by Westminster
- 1979: The US Supreme Court ruled that police can’t randomly stop cars
- 2009: Situ Gintung, an artificial lake in Indonesia, failed killing at least 99 people
- 2013: 12 people were killed in the Philippines after a mini-tornado caused a boat to capsize
- 2019: Facebook banned white nationalism and white supremacy following criticism that the Christchurch, New Zealand terrorist was able to live-stream his attack
