On This Day

  • National Higher Education Day
  • National Hunger Awareness Day
  • National Huntington’s Disease Awareness Day
  • 1673: France and Brandenburg signed a peace treaty
  • 1744: France and Prussia signed a peace treaty
  • 1752: One third of the city of Moscow, Russia was destroyed in the third “great fire” in Moscow in 2 weeks
  • 1795: Fire destroyed one third of Copenhagen, Denmark and injured 18,000 people
  • 1809: Sweden declared independence and a constitutional monarchy was established
  • 1816: New England received 10″ of snowfall as part of the “year without a summer” which followed the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia
  • 1889: A Great Fire in Seattle destroyed 25 downtown blocks
  • 1912: The eruption of Mount Novarupta in Alaska began. It was the largest volcanic eruption (by volume) of the 20th century
  • 1944: In Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion began as the 156,000-strong Allied Expeditionary Force landed in Normandy, France, during World War II
  • 1974: A new Instrument of Government was promulgated making Sweden a parliamentary monarchy
  • 1975: British voters decided to remain in the Common Market
  • 1977: The US Supreme Court tossed out automatic death penalty laws
  • 1978: California’s Proposition 13 cut property taxes 57%
  • 1994: A 6.0 earthquake and avalanche destroyed Toez, Colombia and killed about 1000 people
  • 2005: The United States Supreme Court voted to ban medical marijuana in Gonzales v. Raich
  • 2017: Flooding in Salto, Paysandú and Artigas in Uruguay displaced over 3,000 people
  • 2018: Convicted drug trafficker Alice Johnson was granted clemency by US President Donald Trump
