On This Day

  • Organize Your Home Office Day
  • 1496: Jews were expelled from Carintha, Austria
  • 1522: Martin Luther began preaching his “Invocavit Sermons” in Wittenberg, Germany reminding citizens to trust God’s word rather than violence; thus helping bring to a close the revolutionary stage of the Reformation
  • 1562: Kissing in public was banned in Naples and could be punishable by death
  • 1617: Sweden and Russia signed the Peace of Stolbowa
  • 1820: The Philippines began days of chasing out foreigners during which about 125 people died
  • 1839: The Prussian government limited the work week for children to 51 hours
  • 1841: The US Supreme Court ruled the kidnapped slaves from the Spanish schooner Amistad were free
  • 1889: Kansas passed the first general antitrust law in the US
  • 1891: The Great Blizzard of 1891 began in England and lasted until March 13. During the blizzard 200 people and 6000 animals died
  • 1907: The first involuntary sterilization law in the US was enacted in Indiana
  • 1918: The Russian Bolshevik Party became the Communist Party
  • 1918: Ukrainian mobs massacred the Jews of Seredino Buda
  • 1923: An Amsterdam taxi strike came to an end
  • 1943: The Greek Jews of Salonika were transported to Nazi extermination camps
  • 1957: An 8.1 earthquake shook Alaska’s Andreanof Islands
  • 1979: Major League Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn orders the league to give equal access to female reporters
  • 2007: The US Justice Department released an internal audit that found that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had acted illegally in its use of the USA Patriot Act to secretly obtain personal information about US citizens
  • 2020: Italy announced it was locking down the whole country due to a spike in COVID-19 cases with 10,040 cases and 630 deaths
  • 2020: A one-day women’s strike was held throughout Mexico to protest a murder rate of more than 10 women murdered daily
  • 2021: Brazil recorded its highest daily COVID-19 death toll to date with 1,972 deaths and 168,370 deaths overall
