On This Day

  • National Respect Day
  • 1437: A peasant uprising took place in Transylvania
  • 1739: Turkey and Austria signed a peace treaty and Austria ceded Belgrade to the Turks
  • 1810: Chile declared independence from Spain
  • 1812: The Great Fire of Moscow burned out 5 days after being intentionally set to prevent Napoleon from taking the city. It resulted in 75% of the city being destroyed and 12,000 people killed
  • 1885: Riots broke out in Montreal to protest against compulsory smallpox vaccination
  • 1906: A typhoon and tsunami killed an estimated 10,000 people in Hong Kong
  • 1910: 25,000 people demonstrated in Amsterdam for general suffrage
  • 1914: The Irish Home Rule bill received Royal assent
  • 1919: The Dutch second chamber accepted female suffrage
  • 1919: A hurricane with tides 16 feet above normal drowned 280 people along the US Gulf Coast
  • 1926: A hurricane hit Miami and killed 250 people
  • 1942: The order for “extermination of asocials through labour” was approved by Nazi Minister of Justice, Otto Thierack
  • 1943: Adolf Hitler ordered the deportation of Danish Jews which was unsuccessful
  • 1945: 1000 white people walked out of Gary, Indiana schools to protest integration
  • 1974: Hurricane Fifi struck Honduras with 110 mph winds bringing 5,000 deaths
  • 1989: Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage in Puerto Rico
  • 1997: Voters in Wales voted yes (50.3%) in a referendum on Welsh autonomy
  • 2006: Right wing protesters rioted at the Hungarian Television Building in Budapest, Hungary, one day after an audio tape was made public, in which Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány admitted he and his party lied during the 2006 general elections
  • 2007: Buddhist monks joined anti-government protesters in Myanmar, starting what some called the Saffron Revolution
  • 2014: Scotland voted to stay a member of the United Kingdom in an independence referendum
  • 2014: Emma Watson delivered an address to a standing ovation at UN Headquarters in New York City, helping launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which called for men to advocate for gender equality
  • 2017: Hurricane Maria passed over the Island of Dominica as a category 5 storm, destroying 90% of buildings and killing 27 people
  • 2020: Cyclone Ianos, a rare ‘medicane’ began sweeping across Greece resulting in three people’s deaths
