- National Atheist Day
- 1663: The city of Gemert, Netherlands fined unwed mothers a 50 guilder penalty
- 1792: Groningen, Netherlands feminist Etta Palm d’Aelders, Baroness of Aelders, demanded women’s right to divorce
- 1853: Cincinnati became the first US city to employ fulltime professional firefighters
- 1931: An earthquake devastated Managua, Nicaragua, killing 2,000
- 1933: Nazi Germany began persecution of Jews by boycotting Jewish businesses
- 1954: An earthquake and tsunami ravaged the Aleutian Islands killing 200
- 1971: The United Kingdom lifted all restrictions on gold ownership
- 1973: Japan allowed its citizens to own gold
- 1973: John Lennon and Yoko Ono formed a new country with no laws or boundaries, called Nutopia with a national anthem of silence
- 2001: The Netherlands became the first country in the world to make same-sex marriage legal
- 2002: The Netherlands legalized euthanasia, becoming the first nation in the world to do so
