On This Day

  • National Organize Your Home Day
  • 1593: English Separatist Puritans John Greenwood and Henry Barrowe were tried and sentenced to death on the charges of devising and circulating seditious books
  • 1775: Patrick Henry reportedly famously proclaimed “Give me liberty or give me death” in speech in favour of Virginian troops joining the US’ Revolutionary war
  • 1867: The US Congress passed the second Reconstruction Act over President Andrew Johnson’s veto
  • 1881: A gas lamp set fire to an opera house in Nice, France leading to the deaths of 70 people
  • 1882: The Edmunds Anti-Polygamy Act was adopted by the US leading to the imprisonment of 1300 men
  • 1896: The Raines Law was passed by the New York State Legislature restricting the sale of alcohol to hotels on Sundays
  • 1917: A storm system spawned tornadoes over 4 days that killed 211 people in the Midwestern US
  • 1918: Lithuania proclaimed its independence
  • 1920: The Perserikatan Communist of India (PKI) political party formed
  • 1940: The Lahore Resolution (Qarardad-e-Lahore), calling for independent Muslim states was adopted by the All-India Muslim League
  • 1942: 2,500 Jews of Lublin were either massacred or deported
  • 1956: Sudan became independent
  • 1965: On the worst day of the 1965 Moroccan Riots, the Moroccan army opened fire on demonstrators protesting restrictions on education as part of factional clashes, killing about 100 people
  • 1968: Rev Walter Fauntroy became the first Congressional Delegate to represent Washington DC
  • 1976: With the ratification of 35 nations, the International Bill of Rights went into effect
  • 1981: The US Supreme Court upheld a law making statutory rape a crime only for men
  • 1981: The US Supreme Court ruled states could require, with some exceptions, parental notification when teen-age girls sought abortions
  • 1991: 20 Tornadoes killed 5 people in Tennessee
  • 2013: 20 people were killed and 200 people were injured by a tornado in Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh
  • 2018: A Sahara sandstorm turned snow in Sochi, Russia, orange in one of the largest-ever transfers of desert sand
  • 2019: More than 1 million people marched to demand a new EU referendum in London, England
  • 2020: The World Health Organization (WHO) said the COVID-19 pandemic was accelerating: The first 100,000 cases took 67 days, the second 100,000 cases took 11 days, and the third 100,000 cases took 4 days
  • 2020: COVID-19 lockdowns were imposed in South Africa and the United Kingdom while other European nations extended and strengthened their lockdowns
