On This Day

  • Endangered Species Day
  • World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
  • 1382: An earthquake centered on Dover Straits, in England, with estimated magnitude of 6.0 caused widespread damage, including to Canterbury Cathedral
  • 1792: Japan’s Mount Unzen erupted creating a tsunami and killing about 15,000 people
  • 1864: Russia declared an end to the Russian-Circassian War and forced many Circassians into exile. The day was designated to be the Circassian Day of Mourning
  • 1917: The Great Fire of Atlanta occurred displacing at least 10,000 people, but killing only one person
  • 1918: The US House of Representatives passed a Constitutional Amendment allowing women to vote
  • 1940: AVRO-chairman Willem Vogt fired all Jewish employees
  • 1954: A US Constitutional Amendment to give 18-year-olds the right to vote was defeated
  • 1964: Fire in a Belgian resort killed 19
  • 1977: Fire in a hotel Duc de Brabant, Brussels, killed 19
  • 1980: Ensign Jean Marie Butler became the first woman to graduate from a US Service Academy
  • 2003: An earthquake hit northern Algeria killing more than 2,000 people.
  • 2006: The Republic of Montenegro held and passed a referendum proposing independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.
  • 2019: Washington State became the first US state to legalize human composting
