On This Day

  • William Wilberforce Day
  • 1215: Pope Innocent III declared the Magna Carta invalid
  • 1349: 6,000 Jews, blamed for the Plague, were killed in Mainz
  • 1349: Jews in Cologne Germany set themselves on fire to avoid baptism
  • 1391: Jews in Palma, Mallorca were massacred
  • 1456: The printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed
  • 1572: The St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of Protestants by Roman Catholics began in Paris and later spread to French provinces
  • 1635: The Great Colonial Hurricane affected the Virginia Colony at Jamestown
  • 1751: Thomas Colley was executed in England for drowning a supposed witch
  • 1789: The French National Assembly proclaimed freedom of speech as part of the French Revolution
  • 1816: The Treaty of St. Louis was signed by the US and the united Ottawa, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi tribes in St. Louis, Missouri
  • 1857: The “Panic of 1857” began, setting off one of the most severe economic crises in US history.
  • 1858: Richmond’s “Daily Dispatch” reported 90 black Americans were arrested for “learning”
  • 1876: 2 people were killed in a Riot that caused the abolition of fairs in Amsterdam
  • 1893: A tornado destroyed the coasts of Savannah and Charleston causing about 1000 people’s deaths
  • 1912: The US passed an Anti-Gag Law stating federal employees have the right to petition the government
  • 1929: Palestinians attacked orthodox Jews in Jerusalem
  • 1929: Turkey and Persia signed a friendship treaty
  • 1931: France and the USSR signed a neutrality/no attack treaty
  • 1936: US President FDR gave the FBI the authority to pursue fascists and communists
  • 1939: Germany and the USSR signed a 10-year non-aggression pact
  • 1954: US President Eisenhower signed The Communist Control Act, outlawing the Communist Party, at McCarthyism’s peak
  • 1968: Northern Ireland’s first civil rights march was held
  • 1969: Peru nationalized US oil interests
  • 1991: Ukraine declared independence from the USSR
  • 1992: Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida causing the deaths of 44 people and $25 billion in recorded damage
  • 1992: Diplomatic relations were established between the People’s Republic of China and South Korea
  • 1994: Israel and the PLO signed an accord giving autonomy to Palestinians in the West Bank in matters of education, health, taxation, social welfare, and tourism
  • 2012: Monsoon rains and floods killed 26 people in Pakistan
  • 2016: A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck central Italy killing 268 people and injuring 400 more
