On This Day

  • 1919: Two million gallons of molasses flooded Boston, Massachusetts when a storage tank burst. The “Great Molasses Flood” resulted in the drowning of 21 people and injuring of 150
  • 1934: An 8.4 earthquake hit India and Nepal, killing 10,700 people
  • 1943: The first transport of Jews left from Amsterdam for Vught Concentration Camp
  • 1944: Vught Concentration Camp puts 74 women in 1 cell, leading to 10 deaths
  • 1945: The Soviet Red Army freed the Crakow-Plaszow Concentration Camp
  • 1950: 4,000 people attended the National Emergency Civil Rights Conference in Washington, DC
  • 1983: The Dutch political party DS’70 disbanded
  • 1993: A 7.5 earthquake struck northern Japan killing 2 people
  • 2019: LGBTQ activists accused the Republic of Chechnya of a new gay purge after 40 people were detained and two were killed
  • 2021:The official global death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic passed 2 million
  • 2021: A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island killing at least 42 people and injuring hundreds more
