  • 1550: Jewish physician Joseph Hacohen was expelled from the city of Genoa with all the Jews of the city following soon after
  • 1863: A bread revolt took place in Richmond, Virginia
  • 1917: Jeannette Rankin of Montana began her term as the first woman in the US House of Representatives
  • 1945: Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Brazil were established
  • 1970: Meghalaya became an autonomous state within India’s Assam state
  • 1973: International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) admitted to asking the CIA to influence Chile’s presidential election
  • 1975: Thousands of civilian refugees fled from the Quang Ngai Province and advancing North Vietnamese troops
  • 1986: New York City Mayor Ed Koch signed the city’s Gay Rights Bill into effect
  • 2006: Over 60 tornadoes broke out in the US including Tennessee, which was hardest hit, where 29 people were killed
  • 2013: Uruguay passed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage
  • 2019: 70 villages were evacuated in Khuzesta province, Iran, after flooding from unprecedented rainfall killed at least 45 people
  • 2020: Spain’s COVID-19 death toll passed 10,000 as it posted a record single-day rise of 950 deaths
