  • 1250: Pope Innocent III refused a request by the Jews of Cordova, Spain to build a synagogue
  • 1654: England and the Netherlands signed the Treaty of Westminster ending the First Anglo-Dutch War. It was significant because it was one of the first treaties to include international arbitration as a means of conflict resolution
  • 1715: The Pocotaligo Massacre of 4 out of 6 men who were visiting the Yemassee tribe, seeking their help to arrange a summit to keep the peace with another tribe, triggered the start of the Yamasee War in colonial South Carolina
  • 1783: The Continental Congress ratified preliminary articles of peace, bringing to an end the seven-year-long American Revolutionary war with Great Britain
  • 1817: The American Asylum, now American School for the Deaf (ASD), the first permanent US school for individuals experiencing deafness was founded by Rev. Thomas Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell, and teacher Laurent Clercn in West Hartford, Connecticut
  • 1870: US silver coins were no longer allowed to circulate in Canada after this date
  • 1874: The NY State Legislature passed a compulsory education law
  • 1918: Georges Clémenceau published secret communications between France and the Austro-Hungarian Empire that undermined their peace negotiations as well as the Austro-Hungarian government
  • 1924: Flemish-Walloon riots in Louvain, Belgium left 1 person dead
  • 1927: Switzerland and the USSR agreed to diplomatic relations
  • 1945: The British Army liberated the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp
  • 1945: US troops occupied the Colditz Concentration Camp
  • 1947: Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers
  • 1962: The US national debt rose above $300,000,000,000
  • 1979: A disastrous 7.1 earthquake struck the coast of Montenegro killing 136 people and injuring over 1000 more individuals
  • 1989 Students in Beijing began the Tienanmen Square Protests advocating for greater accountability, constitutional due process, democracy, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech
  • 2010: Volcanic ash from the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland led to the closure of airspace over most of Europe
  • 2019: Measles cases jumped 300% in first three months of 2019, according to World Health Organization, with the largest rises in Africa generally (700%) and Madagascar specifically with the deaths of 800 people
  • 2020: South Korea became the first country to hold a general election under COVID-19
  • 2020: The US experienced it’s deadliest day to date during COVID-19 pandemic with 2,752 deaths reported
  • 2021: “The failed response in Brazil has caused a humanitarian catastrophe” reported Dr. Christos Christou, president of Doctors Without Borders, as the country recorded a quarter of world’s COVID-19 deaths in the previous week
  • 2021: India had over 200,000 daily new cases of COVID-19 for the first time with 1,038 deaths amid a massive second wave
  • 2021: The Ivory Coast court in Abidjanv sentenced former warlord Amadé Ouérémi to a life sentence for massacres by his militia after the 2010 election
