On This Day

  • Come And Take It Day
  • 1854: The Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead started. It led to 53 people’s deaths and hundreds of injuries
  • 1948: The Ashgabat earthquake killed 100,000 people in the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic
  • 1961: US President John F Kennedy advised Americans to build fallout shelters
  • 1966: LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) was first declared illegal in state of California with other US states following suit
  • 2017: Hurricane Nate killed at least 22 people in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. It would kill a total of 48 people
  • 2019: 99 Iraqis died and 4,000 were injured in 5 days of protests against living conditions, unemployment, and corruption
  • 2019: Tens of thousands of Hong Kong protesters marched in defiance of a new ban on face masks
