- 1348: The Friuli Earthquake (estimated magnitude 6.9) hit the Southern Alps and largely destroyed Villach, killing 5,000 people
- 1875: The Anti-Slavery Society formed in New York
- 1890: The National Afro-American League, one of the earliest American Civil Rights organizations, was founded in Chicago
- 1939: An earthquake hit Chillan, Chile, killing about 10,000 people
- 1940: Nazis decreed the establishment of a Jewish ghetto in Lodz, Poland
- 1990: The Burns’ Day windstorm storm hits northwestern Europe
- 1999: An earthquake hit the nation of Colombia, killing around 300 people and injuring about 1000 more
- 2013: Tropical cyclone Oswald made landfall in Queensland, Australia, causing mass flooding
- 2019: At least 20 people died during this week in Venezuelan anti-government protests according to the UN
- 2020: Severe rainstorms caused landslides and floods in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, killing at least 30 people
