Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily.   • Boston Tea Party Day
  • Day of Reconciliation (South Africa)
  • 1575: The Valdivia earthquake took place
  • 1631: Italy’s Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying many villages under lava flows and killing around 3,000 people
  • 1659: General Monck demanded free parliamentary elections in Scotland
  • 1689: The English Parliament passed a Bill of Rights establishing limits on the Crown’s powers and requirements for regular elections
  • 1707: The last recorded eruption of Mount Fuji in Japan
  • 1773: The Boston Tea Party: “Sons of Liberty” protesters threw tea shipments into Boston harbour in protest against the British Tea Act and taxes imposed
  • 1811: An earthquake hit New Madrid, Missouri causing widespread damage
  • 1857: An earthquake occurred in Naples, Italy
  • 1920: An 8.5 earthquake rocked China’s Gansu province killing an estimated 200,000 people
  • 1921: The Anglo-Irish Treaty, agreed to by the British Parliament and Sinn Féin, was ratified
  • 1968: The Second Vatican Council officially revoked the Edict of Expulsion of Jews from Spain
  • 1969: The British House of Commons voted to abolish the death penalty
  • 1991: Kazakhstan declared independence
  • 2012: 4 people were killed after Cyclone Evan struck Fiji
  • 2016: A 5 day pollution “red alert”, classified as a “meteorological disaster” was declared in Beijing and 21 other Chinese cities
  • 2020: A major winter storm hit the Northeastern US resulting in at least seven deaths and Binghamton, New York, receiving a record 41 inches of snow
  • 2020: A 9 year-old girl who died of an asthma attack in 2013 became the first person in the world to officially have air pollution listed as the cause of death
