• Take A Chance Day
• 1516: Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria endorsed “The German Beer Purity Law” (Reinheitsgebot) and added to it standards for the sale of beer in Bavaria, ensuring the beer was only brewed from three ingredients: water, malt, and hops
• 1849: Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky and members of the Petrashevsky Circle were arrested in St. Petersburg for belonging to a group that discussed banned books criitical of Tzarist Russia
• 1891: Jews were expelled from Moscow, Russia
• 1945: Flossenburg Concentration Camp was liberated
• 1969: The Unionist Parliamentary Party voted to introduce universal adult suffrage in local government elections in Northern Ireland with the demand for ‘one man, one vote’ being one of the most powerful slogans of the civil rights movement
• 1969: Over 1000 square miles were flooded in Shantung Province, China
• 1971: Columbia University operations were virtually halted temporarily by a student strike
• 1988: The US instituted a Federal smoking ban during domestic airline flights of 2 hours or less
• 1989: Students in Beijing, China announced class boycotts
• 1991: The USSR granted republics the right to secede under certain conditions
• 1993: Eritrea voted to secede from Ethiopia
• 1997: 42 villagers were killed in the Omaria massacre in Algeria
• 2003: Beijing closed all schools for two weeks because of the SARS virus
• 2013: 21 people were killed during violent unrest in Xinjiang, China
• 2013: The French National Assembly passed an amended bill legalizing same-sex marriage
• 2019: The second of two major earthquakes, a magnitude 6.3 quake, struck the island of Samar, Philippines, a day after a magnitude 6.1 quake hit Luzon Island killing at least 16 people
• 2019: At least 54 jade miners were buried by a mudslide in Kachin State, Myanmar
