On This Day

  • 1789: Pennsylvania ended its prohibition against theatrical performances
  • 1807: The US Congress banned the slave trade within the US, effective January 1, 1808
  • 1819: The US Congress passed its first immigration law
  • 1824: Interstate commerce was brought under federal control
  • 1836: The Republic of Texas declared independence from Mexico
  • 1853: The Territory of Washington was organized after separating from the Oregon Territory
  • 1867: The first Reconstruction Act was passed by the US Congress
  • 1867: The US Congress abolished peonage in New Mexico
  • 1889: Kansas passed the first antitrust law in the US
  • 1917: The Jones-Shafroth Act went into effect granting US citizenship to Puerto Ricans and reformed the government in Puerto Rico
  • 1925: Japan’s House of Representatives recognized male suffrage for those over 25
  • 1933: The most powerful earthquake in 180 years, magnitude 8.4, and a tsunami hit Japan’s Sanriku coast
  • 1937: Mexico nationalized their oil industry
  • 1938: Landslides and floods caused the deaths of over 200 people in Los Angeles
  • 1939: The Massachusetts Legislature voted to ratify the US Bill of Rights, 147 years after their proposal and ratification nationally
  • 1943: The first transport from Westerbork, Netherlands left for Sobibor concentration camp
  • 1956: Morocco abrogated the Treaty of Fez and declared independence from France
  • 2008: Riots in Yerevan, Armenia in response to the Armenian presidential election came to an end, with police forces clashing with civilians in their peaceful protest, and killing 8 people
  • 2012: Tornadoes killed at least 27 people in Indiana and Kentucky
  • 2020: Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage
