Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. • Drowsy Driver Awareness Day
• National Day of Hope
• Plan Your Epitath Day
• 1667: An earthquake devastated Dubrovnik, then an independent city-state
• 1772: Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, ended the tax on men with beards, enacted by Tsar Peter the Great
• 1848: The Jews of Prussia were granted equality
• 1903: A general railroad strike against “worgwetten” (anti-strike laws) began
• 1903: The Kishinev pogrom in Bessarabia began, forcing tens of thousands of Jews to seek refuge in Israel and the West
• 1903: In Holland, railroad and dock workers went on strike, but the government passed anti-strike bills, called out troops, and promptly ended the strike on April 13th
• 1909: The first credit union formed in US
• 1919: Gandhi ordered a general strike
• 1934: 418 Lutheran ministers were arrested in Germany
• 1936: A tornado killed 203 people and injured 1,800 more in Gainesville, Georgia
• 1964: Egypt and Belgium restored diplomatic relations
• 1972: Egypt dropped diplomatic relations with Jordan
• 1973: A dock workers strike began in Ghent and Antwerp, Belgium
• 1992: A general strike was declared by communist groups in Nepal
• 1994: A plane carrying Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana and Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down by surface-to-air missiles, abruptly ending peace negotiations and sparking the Rwandan Genocide. Those responsible have never been identified
• 2009: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near L’Aquila, Italy, killing at least 253 people
• 2016: France passeed legislation making it illegal to pay for sex
• 2016: Protests began in Lima, Peru by 30,000 people against presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori on the 24th anniversary of her father Alberto Fujimori’s coup
• 2020: Cyclone Harold made landfall in Vanuatu, leaving thousands of houses destroyed and 2 people dead
• 2020: The US COVID-19 death toll passed 10,000 in six weeks, with more than 356,000 American infected
• 2020: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe announced a state of emergency in seven prefectures and a nearly $1 trillion stimulus package as COVID-19 cases climb
