  • 1521: Inquisitor-general Adrian Boeyens banned Lutheran books
  • 1645: Michael Cardozo became the first Jewish lawyer in Brazil
  • 1712: After a slave revolt in New York killed 6 white men, 21 African Americans were executed
  • 1891: Nebraska introduced the 8 hour work day
  • 1922: Warren G. Harding’s Interior Secretary, Albert B. Fall, leased the Teapot Dome oil reserves to Harry Sinclair, setting in motion the Teapot Dome scandal
  • 1923: The Workers Party of America (NYC) became the official Communist party
  • 1926: Forest fire burned 900 acres and killed 2 people near San Luis Obispo, California
  • 1933: The first 2 Nazi anti-Jewish laws were enacted barrings Jews from legal and public service professions
  • 1946: Syria’s independence from France was officially recognised
  • 1954: US President Dwight Eisenhower first voiced the fear of a “domino-effect” of communism in Southeast Asia
  • 1959: Oklahoma ended alcohol prohibition after 51 years
  • 1969: The US Supreme Court struck down laws prohibiting the private possession of “obscene material”
  • 1980: Jimmy Carter broke off diplomatic relations with Iran because of a lack of progress regarding the Iranian hostage crisis
  • 1988: Russia announced it would withdraw its troops from Afghanistan
  • 1992: Republika Srpska, the Bosnian Serb Republic, announced its independence
  • 1994: The Rwandan Genocide began with the Presidential Guard killing moderate politicians and public figures in Kigali, including Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana. 800,000 people were killed in all
