- Buddha Day (Historical Birth Date)
- Step Into the Spotlight Day
- 1730: Congregation Shearith Israel opened the first North American synagogue in New York City
- 1766: The first fire escape, a wicker basket on a pulley and chain, was patented
- 1801: Soldiers rioted in Bucharest and killed 128 Jews
- 1802: French Protestant church becomes state-supported & controlled
- 1886: William Ewart Gladstone introduced the first Irish Home Rule Bill in the British House of Commons
- 1902: Demonstrations organised by Belgian socialists where people were demanding better education, living conditions, the right to strike, and universal male suffrage, resulted in a riot and several deaths
- 1913: The US Congress ratified the 17th Amendment to the Constitution providing for direct, popular election of senators
- 1916: Norway approved the right to vote and the right to be a candidate and hold office for women
- 1924: South African State passed the Industrial Conciliation Act No 11, regarding union rights but denying blacks and black unions the same rights
- 1943: US President Franklin D Roosevelt, attempting to check inflation, froze wages and prices, prohibited workers from changing jobs unless it benefited the war effort, and prohibited rate increases to common carriers and public utilities
- 1952: US President Harry Truman nationalized the steel industry to avert a strike by steelworkers
- 1960: The US Senate passed the Civil Rights Act of 1960 to protect the voting rights of racial minorities from discriminatory laws and practices that had effectively left them disenfranchised
- 1971: New York state became the first state other than Nevada to legalize off-track betting
- 1994: Smoking was banned in the Pentagon and on all US military bases
- 1999: Haryana Gana Parishad, a political party in the Indian state of Haryana, merged with the Indian National Congress
- 2013: 163 people were killed and 50,000 were displaced after tribal violence erupted in Darfur, Sudan
- 2017: Protests by thousands of people against the government in Caracas, Venezuela continued for a fifth day
- 2020: A Saudi-backed coalition fighting Houthi fighters in Yemen called for a ceasefire after five years of fighting to attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19
- 2021: US President Joe Biden said “Gun violence in this country is an epidemic” as he unveiled a package of executive actions including restrictions on “ghost guns”
