On This Day

• 1510: Pope Julius II excommunicated the entire republic of Venice
• 1868: The US House of Representatives voted126 to 47 to impeach President Andrew Johnson
• 1908: In ‘Muller v Oregon’, the US Supreme Court favored an Oregon law limiting the maximum hours a woman may work and denied that it curtailed the ‘liberty of contract’
• 1911: Japan and the US concluded a treaty that continued restrictions on Japanese laborers
• 1918: Estonia declared independence from Russia
• 1933: The German Communist Party held its final demonstration in Berlin
• 1949: Israel and Egypt signed an armistice agreement
• 1969: Northern Ireland Stormont Parliament elections were held and the Unionist party fragmented into ‘Official Unionist’ and ‘Unofficial Unionist’
• 1970: 29 Swiss Army officers died in an avalanche in Reckingen, Switzerland
• 1981: A 6.7 earthquake hit Athens, Greece killing 16 people and destroying buildings in several towns west of the city
• 1983: A special commission of the U.S. Congress released a report condemning the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II
• 2019: The Roman Catholic Church summit on paedophilia ended with Pope Francis promising more action and calling those guilty “tools of Satan”
• 2020: Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape and a criminal sexual act in a landmark case that ignited the #MeToo movement
