- Christmas
- 1621: Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony (now in Massachusetts) forbade game playing on Christmas
- 1651: The Massachusetts General Court ordered a five shilling fine for “observing any such day as Christmas”
- 1717: Floods ravaged the Dutch coastal provinces, killing thousands of people
- 1831: Louisiana and Arkansas became the first states to observe the Christmas holiday
- 1868: Despite opposition, US President Andrew Johnson granted an unconditional pardon to everyone involved in the Confederacy during the Civil War
- 1932: A 7.6 magnitude earthquake ravaged Qansu, China, killing 275 people
- 1953: An avalanche of lava from New Zealand’s Ruapehu volcano killed 150 people in New Zealand
- 1965: The Yemeni Nasserite Unionist People’s Organisation was founded in Taiz
- 1974: Cyclone Tracy virtually destroyed Darwin, Australia
- 2012: 8 people were killed and thousands left homeless after two fires struck Manila, Philippines
