On This Day

  • International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers aka Red Hand Day
  • NAACP Day
  • National Freedom to Marry Day
  • 1502: Muslims in Granada were forced to convert to Catholicism
  • 1719: The Onderlinge van 1719 u.a., the oldest existing life insurance company in the Netherlands was founded
  • 1793: The first US fugitive slave law was passed which required the return of escaped slaves
  • 1818: Chile gained independence from Spain
  • 1825: The Creek Indian Treaty was signed in which Tribal chiefs agreed to turn over all their land in Georgia to the government and migrate West by September 1, 1826
  • 1870: Utah became the second territory in the United States to pass a law allowing women the vote, after Wyoming in 1869
  • 1873: The US Congress passed the Coinage Act of 1873 abolishing bimetallism and placing the country on the gold standard
  • 1877: US railroad builders began a strike against wage reduction
  • 1882: The Social-Democratic Union formed in Amsterdam
  • 1909: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed
  • 1909: Netherlands’ SDAP suspended the Marxist Tribune group (Gorter & Wijnkoop)
  • 1920: 14,000 Rotterdam and Amsterdam harbor workers began a strike that would last until April 26th
  • 1925: The first federal arbitration law was passed by the US Congress
  • 1925: Estonia passed the Law on Cultural Self-Government for National Minorities allowing a unique degree of autonomy to ethnic and religious groups of 3,000 or more
  • 1934: France experienced a general strike against fascists and royalists
  • 1949: Panic shook Quito, Ecuador, after “War of the Worlds” played on radio
  • 1953: The USSR broke off diplomatic relations with Israel
  • 1962: A bus boycott started in Macon, Georgia
  • 1973: The first US POWs in North Vietnam were released and 116 of 456 were flown to the Philippines
  • 1989: 5 Pakistani Muslim rioters were killed protesting the novel “The Satanic Verses”
  • 1999: US President Bill Clinton was acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial
  • 2004: San Francisco, California began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples after a directive from Mayor Gavin Newsom
  • 2006: A powerful winter storm blanketed the Northeastern US dumping 1 to 2 feet of snow from Washington, DC up to Boston, Massachusetts. The storm dumped a record 26.9 inches of snow on New York City
  • 2017: 180,00 residents were ordered to evacuate after an emergency spillway at Oroville Dam in California threatened to collapse
  • 2018: Tropical cyclone Gita struck Tonga causing widespread damage
  • 2019: A 24 hour general strike in Belgium forced all flights to be cancelled and schools shut
