On This Day

  • World Day for Social Justice
  • 1725: 10 sleeping Indians were scalped by whites in New Hampshire for £100 per scalp bounty
  • 1768: The first American-chartered fire insurance company opened in Pennsylvania
  • 1809: The US Supreme Court ruled the federal government’s power is greater than any state’s in US v Peters
  • 1835: Concepcion, Chile was destroyed by earthquake in which 5,000 people died
  • 1869: Tennessee Governor WC Brownlow declared martial law in a crisis with the Ku Klux Klan
  • 1922: Vilnius, Lithuania agreed to separate from Poland
  • 1939: 20,000 people attended a pro-Nazi rally by the German American Bund at Madison Square Garden
  • 1941: The first transport of Jews left Plotsk, Poland for concentration camps
  • 1941: Nazi Germany ordered Polish Jews barred from using public transportation
  • 1941: Romania broke off diplomatic relations with the Netherlands
  • 1943: A new volcano, Paracutin, erupted and rose up in a farmer’s corn field Mexico
  • 1966: Author Valery Tarsis was banished from the USSR
  • 1978: Egypt announced it was pulling its diplomats out of Cyprus
  • 1988: 500 people died in heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • 1991: A gigantic statue of Albania’s long-time dictator, Enver Hoxha, was brought down in the Albanian capital, Tirana, by mobs of angry protesters
  • 1994: Pope John Paul II demanded discrimination against homosexuals in the law
  • 2016: Tropical Cyclone Winston hit Fiji, killing at least 29 people
  • 2017: A famine was declared in Unity State, South Sudan, affecting 4.9 million people
  • 2018: Venezuela became the first country to launch a virtual currency, the Petro, to counteract their financial crisis
  • 2021: Security forces opened fire killing two people and wounding 40 in Mandalay, in the bloodiest day of protests in Myanmar since its coup
  • 2021: US President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in Texas as the state struggled to cope with the aftermath of a crippling winter storm
