Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day
- 356: Emperor Constantius II ordered the closure of all “heathen” temples
- 1539: The Jews of Tyrnau, Hungary (then known as Trnava, Czech),were expelled
- 1600: The Peruvian volcano Huaynaputina exploded in one of the most violent eruptions in South America’s recorded history
- 1674: The Netherlands and England signed the Peace of Westminster which transferred New York City to English control
- 1881: Kansas became the first state to prohibit all alcoholic beverages
- 1884: Over 60 tornadoes struck Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana killing hundreds, if not over a thousand people. The exact number is unknown, which is why this massive tornado outbreak is known as the “Enigma Outbreak”
- 1910: Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary, was freed from her first period of forced isolation and went on to cause several further outbreaks of typhoid in the New York area
- 1927: A general strike against British occupiers took place in Shanghai
- 1942: US President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered the detention and internment of all Japanese-Americans living near the West Coast
- 1949: Mass arrests of communists were carried out in India
- 1959: Britain, Turkey, and Greece signed an agreement granting Cyprus independence
- 1968: The first strike by teachers in the US took place in Florida
- 1987: US President Reagan lifted the trade boycott against Poland
- 1990: Police killed 8 demonstrators who were advocating for a multi-party system in Nepal
- 2014: The death toll in Ukraine reached 26 as the government crackdown on protesters continued
- 2019: New York City banned hair discrimination in an effort to limit racial stereotyping
