- Freethinkers Day aka Thomas Paine Day
- 1834: US President Andrew Jackson ordered the use of US troops to suppress a labor dispute for the first time
- 1905: Tsar Nicolas II of Russia, unsettled by the rising violence and protests, enacted reforms to improve the conditions of workers, however these changes did little to stop disorder throughout Russia in the ensuing months
- 1907: Charles Curtis (Kansas) became the first Native American to become a US Senator
- 1912: Martial law was declared in response to a textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts
- 1921: A hurricane hit Washington and Oregon
- 1948: Pakistan’s Socialist Party was founded
- 1959: Smog pollution worse than the 1952 ‘Great Smog of London’ hit London, causing many people to suffer chest and lung-related illnesses
- 1966: A snow storm in the Northeastern US killed 165 people
- 1989: The Episcopal Church of the United States appointed Barbara Harris as its first female bishop
- 2001: Thousands of student protesters in Indonesia stormed Parliament and demanded that President Abdurrahman Wahid resign due to alleged involvement in corruption scandals
- 2017: A French Canadian student attacked a mosque in Quebec killing 6 people and injuring 17 people
