• 1574: A Storm broke the Leiden dike and drowned 20,000 Spanish soldiers through the next day
• 1864: A cyclone struck Calcutta resulting in the deaths of 70,000 people
• 1898: Jews were expelled from Kiev, Ukraine
• 1898: Tsar Nikolay II expelled Jews from major Russian cities
• 1931: The Spanish Cortes accepted general female suffrage
• 1960: Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain
• 1961: A volcanco believed to be extinct erupted in Tristan da Cunha
• 1961: East and West Cameroon merged to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon
• 1962: James Meredith became the first black student at the University of Mississippi
• 1975: Britain granted internal self-government to Seychelles
• 1975: Ellice Islands split from Gilbert Islands and took the name “Tuvalu”
• 1978: Tuvalu (formerly Ellice Islands) declared independence from the UK

• 1987: The 5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake shook the San Gabriel Valley
• 1990: Serbs in Croatia proclaimed autonomy
• 2015: A mudslide on the outskirts of Guatemala City left at least 131 people dead and 300 more missing
• 2017: Amid a deepening constitutional crisis, Catalonia held an independence referendum on seceding from Spain
