  • Civil Rights Day

  • International Mentoring Day
  • 1718: An avalanche destroyed every building in Leukerbad, Switzerland; killing 53 people
  • 1775: 9 old women were burned as witches for causing bad harvests in Kalisk, Poland
  • 1920: The was the first day of alcohol prohibition in the US as a result of the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution
  • 1945: Auschwitz concentration camp began evacuations
  • 1945: Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, credited with saving tens of thousands of Jews from the Nazis, was arrested by Soviet secret police in Hungary
  • 1961: US President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered a televised farewell address to the nation three days before leaving office, in which he warned against the accumulation of power by the military-industrial complex
  • 1971: At a party conference in Dublin, Sinn Féin ended their 65 year abstentionist policy and agreed that any elected representative could take their seat at the Dáil
  • 1983: Nigeria expelled 2 million illegal aliens, mostly Ghanaians
  • 1984: The US Supreme Court ruled that private use of home VCRs to tape TV programs for later viewing did not violate federal copyright laws
  • 1987: US President Reagan signed a secret order permitting the covert sale of arms to Iran
  • 1994: A 6.6 earthquake hit Los Angeles killing 60 people and causing $30 billion in damage
  • 1995: A 7.2 earthquake destroyed Kobe, Japan and killed 5,372 people
  • 2002: Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, displacing an estimated 400,000 people.
  • 2013: 4 people were killed and over 2,000 people were evacuated after massive floods hit Jakarta, Indonesia
