• 1919: The Paris peace conference, aka the Versailles peace conference, to negotiate the treaties formally ending the Great War, aka World War I, began
• 1944: A Chinese-born person became a naturalized US citizen for the first time since the repeal of the Exclusion Acts
• 1951: Mount Lamington in Papua New Guinea erupted, killing 2,942 people
• 1972: The Prime Minister of Northern Ireland banned all parades and marches in Northern Ireland until the end of the year
• 1993: The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 states in the USA for first time
• 2007: Hurricane Kyrill killed at least 44 people in Western Europe, including 14 in Great Britain and 13 in Germany
