On This Day

  • 1480: In the Battle of Otranto, Ottoman troops beheaded 800 Christians for refusing to convert to Islam
  • 1553: Pope Julius III ordered the confiscation and burning of copies of the Jewish Talmud
  • 1831: Netherlands and Belgium signed a peace treaty
  • 1898: Hawaii was formally annexed by the US
  • 1898: The peace protocol that ended the Spanish–American War was signed
  • 1931: China’s Yangtzee River flooded after heavy rains causing dikes to crumble
  • 1944: Nazi Waffen SS troops massacred 560 people in Sant’Anna di Stazzema
  • 1953: 435 people were killed after a strong earthquake struck Greece’s Ionian Islands
  • 1959: South Africa’s Progressive Party formed under John Steytler
  • 1964: Race rioting occurred in Elizabeth, New Jersey
  • 1965: Race riots happened in Chicago
  • 1972: The last American combat ground troops left Vietnam
  • 1976: A Christian militia conquered the Palestinian camp Tell al-Za’tar and killed 2000 people
  • 1978: China and Japan signed a peace treaty
  • 1979: Iranian censors started massive book burnings
  • 2005: A tornado struck Wright, Wyoming destroying nearly 100 homes and killing two people
  • 2005: The Maldives experienced civil unrest
  • 2005: A rare tornado struck New York’s Glen Cove on Long Island
  • 2008: A ceasefire was negotiated in the Russo-Georgian War after 5 days
  • 2014: The Ebola outbreak death toll exceeded 1000
  • 2014: The World Health Organization (WHO) gave ‘cautious blessing’ to the use of experimental drugs to treat the Ebola virus
  • 2017: The “Unite the Right” March in Charlottesville, Virginia turned violent when a car rammed protesters killing 1 person and injuring 19 people
  • 2019: The ‘Glitter Revolution’ began in Mexico City when a security chief was showered with pink glitter in protest of violence against women after a teenager was raped by police
  • 2020: Yemeni authorities said at least 172 people died in floods caused by torrential rains, which also destroyed historic buildings in Sanaa, a Unesco World Heritage Site
