  • Virtual Advocacy Day
  • 1774: Britain passed the Coercive Acts, known in the US as the Intolerable Acts, to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party
  • 1799: New York State abolished slavery
  • 1804: Ohio passed a law restricting the movement of Black Americans
  • 1845: Mexico cut off diplomatic relations with the US
  • 1917: Jews were expelled from Tel Aviv and Jaffa by Turkish authorities
  • 1920: The Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak of 1920 affected the Great Lakes region and Deep South states
  • 1946: The US State Department released the Acheson-Lilienthal Report, outlining a plan for the international control of nuclear power as part of the Cold War
  • 1970: 1,086 people died when a 7.4 earthquake struck Turkey
  • 1979: A partial meltdown at Three Mile Island nuclear plant in the US resulted in the release of radioactive gas and iodine into the atmosphere but no deaths
  • 1994: Armed Zulus demonstrated in Johannesburg, over 53 were killed in response
  • 2005: The 8.7 Sumatran earthquake rocked Indonesia, and was the second strongest earthquake since 1960
  • 2006: At least 1 million union members, students, and unemployed people took to the streets in France in protest at the government’s proposed First Employment Contract law
  • 2009: The first cases of H1N1 swine flu in the United States occured in two people in California
  • 2014: Russia increased the price of gas to Ukraine by 80%
  • 2014: 2 cases of Ebola were reported in Liberia among people who had travelled to Guinea
  • 2017: US President Donald Trump signed an energy independence executive order undoing climate-control measures instituted during the Obama administration
  • 2017: Cyclone Debbie struck the Northeast Queensland coast as a category 4 storm
  • 2019: The European Parliament banned single-use plastics, including cutlery and straws effective by 2021
