- Earth Hour Day
- 1668: England took control of Bombay, India
- 1790: The US Congress passed a Naturalization Act requiring 2 years residency prior to naturalization
- 1804: The US Congress ordered the removal of Native Americans east of Mississippi to Louisiana
- 1812: A 7.7 earthquake destroyed 90% of Caracas, Venezuela and killed an estimated 15,000–20,000 people
- 1863: Voters in West Virginia approved the gradual emancipation of slaves
- 1872: An 7.8 earthquake shook Owens Valley, California
- 1910: The US prohibited immigration by criminals, anarchists, paupers and the sick
- 1953: Dr. Jonas Salk announced he had successfully tested a vaccine to prevent polio
- 1962: The US Supreme Court backed the apportionment of seats in state legislatures by the principle of 1-man-1-vote
- 1966: Large anti-Vietnam War protests took place throughout the US, including New York, Washington DC, and Chicago
- 1970: The Police (Northern Ireland) Act became law, providing for the disarmament of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and the establishment of an RUC reserve force
- 1971: Bangladesh (East Pakistan) declared independence from Pakistan
- 1975: The Biological Weapons Convention went into effect
- 1979: Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in Washington, DC
- 1981: Police and Albanian demonstrators battled in Kosovo, Yugoslavia
- 1999: A jury in Michigan found Dr Jack Kevorkian guilty of second-degree murder for administering a lethal injection to a terminally ill man
- 2005: The Taiwanese government called on 1 million Taiwanese to demonstrate in Taipei in opposition to the Anti-Secession Law of the People’s Republic of China. Around 200,000 to 300,000 attended
- 2006: In Scotland a prohibition against smoking in all substantially enclosed public places went into effect
- 2017: Anti-corruption protests in Russia resulted in the arrests of hundreds, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny
- 2018: The US, European Union, and Ukraine expelled more than 100 Russian diplomats in response to Russian use of nerve gas in the UK
- 2018: The US Federal Trade Commission confirmed it would investigate Facebook over privacy concerns
- 2019: The European Parliament made changes to copyright laws which made internet companies responsible for copyright infringements
