  • 1791: The US Congress passed the first internal revenue act taxing distilled spirits and carriages
  • 1791: Congress established the US Mint
  • 1801: David Emanuel, the first Jewish Governor in the US, took office in Georgia
  • 1842: Massachusetts passed the first US child labor law regulating working hours
  • 1861: Alexander II of Russia signed the Emancipation Manifesto, freeing serfs and granting them the full rights of free citizens
  • 1863: The first US wartime military conscription bill was enacted
  • 1863: Gold certificates, as currency, were authorized by the US Congress
  • 1865: The Freedmen’s Bureau was established
  • 1869: The University of South Carolina opened to all races
  • 1871: The US Congress changed the legal status of Native American tribes from independent to dependent and designating individual Native Americans as “wards” of the federal government
  • 1873: US Congress enacted the Comstock Law, making it illegal to send any “obscene, lewd, or lascivious” books through the mail
  • 1879: Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood became the first female lawyer heard by US Supreme Court
  • 1903: North Carolina became the first US state to require registration of nurses
  • 1913: A Women’s Suffrage procession marched through Washington, DC. Ida B. Wells marched with her Illinois delegation despite blacks being told to march separately
  • 1917: The US Congress passed the first excess profits tax on corporations
  • 1917: The first major strike of the Russian “February Revolution” began at the giant Putilov factory in Petrograd
  • 1917: Mexico and the US renewed diplomatic relations
  • 1919: Germany’s Communist Party announced a general strike
  • 1935: The Dutch Revolutionary Socialist Worker’s Party (RSAP) was formed
  • 1939: Mahatma Gandhi began a fast in Mumbai (previously known as Bombay) to protest against autocratic rule in India
  • 1956: Morocco gained independence from France
  • 1966: A tornado hit Jackson, Mississippi, only 3 minutes after its first sighting, and caused the deaths of 57 people
  • 1967: Grenada gained partial independence from Great Britain
  • 1991: Latvia and Estonia voted to become independent of the USSR
  • 1991: Los Angeles police officers severely beat Rodney King. The beating was captured on and later led to rioting when the police officers were acquitted
  • 1991: Switzerland voted on lowering the voting age from 20 to 18
  • 2017: A mass grave of 800 children and infants was confirmed at a former Catholic care home in Tuam, Ireland
  • 2019: Multiple tornadoes tore through Georgia and Alabama killing at least 23 people
  • 2020: A powerful storm spawning multiple tornadoes ripped through central Tennessee causing at least 25 deaths
  • 2020: Heavy rains and landslides hit coastal areas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, Brazil, killing at least 18 people
  • 2021: 38 people were shot and killed by security forces in anti-coup protests in Myanmar
