- International Survivors of Suicide Day
- 1334: The St Clemens Flood occurred in which a dike broke along the Flemish/Zeeuwse/Dutch coast
- 1584: The English Parliament expelled Jesuits
- 1921: US President Warren G. Harding signed the Willis Campell Act (anti-beer bill) forbidding doctors from prescribing beer or liquor for medicinal purposes
- 1939: Nazi Governor of Poland Hans Frank required Jewish Poles older than 11 to wear a blue Star of David
- 1946: The Workers Party of South Korea was founded
- 1980: 4,800 people died in series of earthquakes that devastated southern Italy
- 1980: The National Black Independent Party formed
- 2014: A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck central Japan
- 2015: President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia banned “Khatna”, the Islamic ritual practice of genital mutilation of young girls
