On This Day

  • International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict
  • 1813: The Chilpancingo Congress declared Mexico’s independence from Spain
  • 1844: Spain granted the Dominican Republic independence
  • 1910: The Dutch SDAP and NVV parties initiated a campaign for general suffrage for men and women
  • 1917: The Bolshevik revolution began with the bombardment of Petrograd’s Winter Palace during the Russian October Revolution
  • 1941: The Nazi Einsatz Gruppe killed 15,000 Jews in Rovno, Ukraine
  • 1942: Nazis killed 12,000 Jews in the Minsk ghetto
  • 1962: Saudi Arabia proclaimed the abolition of slavery
  • 1973: Abe Beame was elected the first Jewish mayor of New York City

  • 2018: Colorado voted to abolish slavery as an allowable form of punishment in the state constitution
  • 2018: Colorado elected Jared Polis, the country’s first openly male gay governor
